Late 2012 27-inch iMac: Blank screen, Internet Recovery

I have a late 2012 27” iMAC. A new SSD hard drive was fitted about 6 months ago. I had a blank screen yesterday and am now starting Internet Recovery with the spinning globe on the screen. Any advice for carrying out recovery and potential problems I may encounter.

That 2012 iMac should be able to run macOIS 15.7.3 Catalina. That is the OS you probably want to reinstall from Internet recovery.

❝If you used Option-Command-R to start up from Internet Recovery, you might get the latest macOS that is compatible with your Mac.❞

If you have trouble reinstalling Catalina, I suggest you get your hands on another Mac released between 2012 and 2019. With that you should be able to create a bootable usb installer for macOS Catalina and use that to reinstall the OS.

A new SSD hard drive was fitted about 6 months ago...

Details are useful here. We may be able to better help you if you can describe the "new SSD." That model had severals torage options that affect what upgrade drives can be used. From the macTracker database:

1 or 3 TB mechanical (7200-rpm SATA); 1 TB or 3 TB Fusion Drive; or 256, 512, or 768 GB flash storage

— A large SATA-6 mech hard drive would be in the main drive bay

— The Fusion drive had A) a large SATA-6 Mech HD in the main drive bay, and B) a tiny blade-type SSD slotted on the hard-to-access side of the logic board. The two were linked by software to act as one.

— The "pure" Flash option was a large-capacity blade-type SSD on the hard-to-access side of the logic board. Nothing was in the SATA-6 main drive bay.

Was the original storage working when the SSD was installed?
