I can't download or update free apps without a card on file

Every time I try to download an FREE app, FREE. It tells me to put in a password. Normal, right? Yeah! So, I put in the passcode, and guess what shows up? “Sign in to verify billing information”.

THE APP IS FREE. I HAVE NO CARD ON FILE. I PHYSICALLY CANNOT PUT A CARD ON FILE BECAUSE MY PARENTS DON’T ALLOW IT. PLEASE HELP.

Also, please don’t give me the “just put a card on file” or “ask your parents”. I literally stated that my parents DON’T ALLOW IT. I can’t download anything or even update it. I have one subscription that I have cancelled and expires on December 25. Do I honestly have to wait until the end of the year to update or download anything?

Other than that, I have no subscriptions.

No cards on file.

Nothing.

Please try to get back to me quickly, thank you.

Apple requiring a payment method such as a credit or debit card, even for free apps or where you have enough account balance to pay for the item, is not an uncommon observation. Some possible reasons are outlined in the links below such as outstanding balance, an issue with a payment method you have currently entered, ongoing subscriptions, or simply because they say so. You can try to configure your account to not have a payment method but you may find there is no option other than to enter a valid payment method to satisfy one of Apple's requirements. If the item is free you will not be charged. If it costs something, your Apple ID balance will in most cases be used first. You can later try to remove the payment method and see if it only needs to be there temporarily. This might satisfy your parents if they are concerned about you having open access to their card.

If you have something else on your account that requires a payment method, such as a subscription, and your current payment method is not working then Apple won't let you download even free things until you fix the payment method. - If you have any active subscriptions, you must have at least one payment method on file other than Apple ID credit.

- You might not be able to remove a payment method if you have a balance due.

So, the resolution will be to add a payment method:

Another option would be for a parent to create a family Sharing group with you as one of the members. They would have to add a payment method, but if you qualify for having Ask To Buy added to your account, they would have control over spending that could end up being charged to that card.

long story short, Apple often requires a form of payment before an account can be used. One acceptable payment method is an Apple Gift Card. Buy a small gift card and redeem it as your payment method. It's acceptable for most purchases, but if, as you say, all you want are free apps, there shouldn't be any problem

Ask your parents about the gift card if you need their permission.

How did you pay for that subscription? Cancelling just prevents a subscription from automatically renewing, it does not remove the cost of the subription. A free trial must be cancelled a day before a trial period ends and it would not be a free trial that shows it is ending on December 25th. You may be waiting much longer than that depending on what happened with the previous subscription.
