old iphone asking to be set up as a new phone

my phone for some reason is asking me to set it up as a new phone- not sure why this happened. i started to do this and when i got to the part about transfering apps and data from my mac- it said to connect with a cable which. i did and now nothing is happening? why did this happen and how do i get my data back?
