M1 MacBook Pro: Sound effects revert from internal speakers

Hey, I've got an m1 macbook pro. My problem is that when I set "Play sound effects through" to macbook speakers, it will eventually reset to whatever the system output is.

I'm an audio engineer and I play walk in music or performance tracks through my headphone jack. As funny as it is to watch a thousand people check their phones at the same time every time I get a text and it plays through the system, it's not really a good look. I do usually remember to change my system sounds output, but it'd be really nice to not have to remember.

I still want system sounds in my normal use, but when I plug in headphones I want system sounds to stay on local speakers. Is there a way to force that patch to persist? A plist setting or terminal command or something? ty.

Using Multiple Audio Output Devices Simultaneously:

I. Add your Devices:

Create this as a stack, with the macOS being at the top. Go here: Play Audio Through Multiple Devices at Once in Audio MIDI Setup on Mac - Apple Support

then...

II. Designate the MacBook Pro Speakers for Notifications:

  1. Go to: System Settings
  2. Click: Sound
  3. Expand: Play sound affects through
  4. Select: MacBook Pro Speakers
