Mac password/Touch ID upon closing lid?

Hi everyone,

Is there no way to have my Mac ask for a password/touch ID as soon as I've closed the lid?

I have "Turn display off when inactive" set to 5 minutes, and I want to keep it that way, but there seems to be no setting to have the display turn off when you close the lid?

Also not finding any other way to have it require password/touch ID after closing the lid.

Using an M1 Pro, running Sequoia 15.7.3

Thanks!

System Settings... > Lock Screen.

Set "Require password after screen saver begins or display is turned off" to: Immediately.

Sorry for the late reply. Was very unwell this week.

In good news: it's working! Realized late that I was testing while my laptop was attached to an external screen and as the latter stayed on, the Mac would follow the 5-min inactivity rule I've set instead of "noticing" the laptop's screen had shut. Sorry!

Appreciate the help. Might have taken me a while otherwise :)

That's an extra action on my behalf. The system can't understand when the screen is closed? Maybe it can't. I'm honestly asking.

?

System Settings > Lock Screen and set "Require password after sleep or screen saver begins" to "Immediately,"

if it is not working as expected:

you can use the keyboard shortcut

or

use Hot Corners

or

Hope you're feeling better.

Happy to know you have this sorted out.

You're welcome.

It is also possible the Lid Angle Sensor is not functioning correctly. When you close the lid, you should be able to see the built-in Display go dark while the lid is still about 1/8" from closing fully. I like to wait at least five minutes, then slowly lift the lid so see that the display activates when it reaches that same point. If this occurs, then the Lid Angle Sensor is probably working Ok and you may have a software issue, or perhaps a corrupt .plist preference file (I'm not sure what exact file holds that setting).

The Lock Screen settings that I and our friend, @leroydouglas, have highlighted are the key to the action that you are requesting. Upon closing the lid it may take a few seconds before the Mac registers the lid as closed and actually locks the screen. Give it five seconds and see what happens.

If the setting is not working, try restarting your Mac in safe mode and change it while boot that way. If 'Immediately' is already selected, then select a different interval, close the settings window and maybe reboot your Mac or log out of your user account. Then reboot or login again and reevaluate the issue.

Another way to troubleshoot this will be to use another user account and make the same change. Evaluate whether the feature works as expected.

You can always use the Control Command Q shortcut....

FYI, I would actually give it at least a minute at least for testing purposes. I've seen some Macs take that long before I'm presented with a login prompt after closing the lid. Ideally it should only require a few seconds.
