iCloud Messages storage not decreasing after disabling sync

hi,

From my devices I stopped sharing Messages with iCloud. Yet still some 2.3GB remains there. Under Manage Storage it says Messages 46%.

In my understanding messages should disappear from iCloud and only remains stored on the devices (but not synced).

Should I wait a day or so for accurate storage information or is there something else I could do?

The goal is around 0% storage in iCloud.

iPhone 13 mini, iOS 26

It was B. Sort of. In my iPhone I overlooked a setting. I did turn of Messages under 'iCloud' under 'General'. But I had to go deeper in the menu. There is 'Messages in iCloud' and a slider 'Use on this iPhone'. Now it promises to delete the messages in 29 days, until then I can retrieve them if I change my mind.

The new situation is immediately reflected under 'Manage' in the desktop iCloud menu.

Thank you.

Ridding of Messages from iCloud Storage:

A. Remove from Recently Deleted:

Go into Messages, and delete all that are in Recently Deleted. Go Here: Delete Messages and Attachments in Messages on iPhone - Apple Support

B. New iCloud Sessions:

Sign out of your Apple Account (in settings) on ALL of your devices, and then sign back in once more.
