OS 15.7.3 is crashing to black every few hours

OS 15.7.3 crashing to black every few hours. This just started with the most recent update. I have a 2021 iMac M1 with 8GB. I do not have any new software, everything I'm running has been on the system without problems for more than a year.

Anyone else running into this issue?

Thanks in advance.

iMac 24″, macOS 15.7

The report indicates that there are none of the usual suspected installed but you are extremely low on free space:

disk3s5 - Data [APFS Virtual drive]

Filesystem: APFS

Mount point: /System/Volumes/Data

FileVault Disabled

Used: 188.11 GB

Shared values

Size: 245.11 GB

Free: 20.96 GB !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Available: 99.72 GB

You should bet an external drive (preferably an SSD formatted to APFS) and remove appropriately 80 GB of space. This is to facilitate optimal system and application performance.

Also you seem to be on a Managed laptop? Who owns the laptop? You have over 10 profiles. Normally on a single user machine there are none.

Also there are no indications of backups. The first thing you should do is get an eternal drive that is 1 - 2 TB in size for use with Time Machine which is included with every Mac.

If this Mac is owned by your employer take it to the IT Department and have them find out what's causing the problem.

In addition to the low HD space, I also suspect you may be experiencing a Dropbox/OneDrive conflict, although that may just be the case due to the limited storage space available. This occurs when one service "touches" a file to check for syncing status and the other recognizes that as a change where that file needs to resync using the other service and prompts Spotlight to reindex that file. This is seen in CPU usage of the report with mdworker_shared using 109.9% and mdsync using 50.9% and both are responsible for Spotlight indexing of new or changed files.

In your ~/Library/LaunchAgents folder there are 3 different Dropbox files that shows conflicting information on install dates and 2 of them are showing as Not Loaded and Not Signed, so I don't know if it was installed previously a year ago and not properly removed or if it was updated and no longer using the other files. In my opinion I would uninstall Dropbox and verify all the files located there have been removed and then reinstall with the latest version. Here are the files I am talking about and you can navigate to them by going to the Finder, Go menu, then Go To Folder and enter ~/Library/LaunchAgents. Don't forget that little "~" character at the start.

  • [Loaded] com.dropbox.DropboxUpdater.wake.plist (Dropbox, Inc. - installed 2026-01-05)
  • [Not Loaded] com.dropbox.dropboxmacupdate.agent.plist (Not signed - installed 2025-03-28)
  • [Not Loaded] com.dropbox.dropboxmacupdate.xpcservice.plist (Not signed - installed 2025-03-11)

While Kernel Panics can be a Hardware issue, I always choose to eliminate a Software Conflict first and test without any connected devices.

Of course if you are not experiencing any issues by freeing up additional drive space, no further action is needed.

Have you tried rebooting?

Please download and run Etrecheck.  The free version is sufficient.

Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Copy the report

and after clicking on the Reply button use the Additional Text button to paste the report in your reply.

Then we can examine the report and see if we can determine the cause of the problem.

I wonder if just updating to Tahoe would fix it, this all started when I ran an overdue update for Sequoia 15.7.3.

No, do not upgrade the OS to a new major version. That will not fix it, but is likely to make things more complicated. With a Kernel Panic the iMac has either a hardware issue, or an issue with some third party software.

Please post a complete EtreCheck as requested by @Old Toad because the Kernel Panic log you posted is not enough to determine the cause. The information within the EtreCheck report can help us determine if it may be hardware or software causing the problem.

You can also try disconnecting all external devices from the iMac just in case one of them is causing a problem.....of course you will need to leave a mouse & keyboard connected.

Hey, it attached!

P.S. I saw in the report that I was running out of hard drive space so I have already freed some space up. Also, I detached all peripherals before running the test. And no crash in the past 24 hours. But let's see what you think.

I recall that I was in such a hurry when I bought this one that I forgot to ask for a larger drive, and immediately regretted it. I won't make that mistake again. I am surprised at how old this unit is - in my mind it was only about two years ago I bought it, but no, it's actually going on five.

Thank you.

I'm having similar problems with macos Sequoia 15.7.3 on a 2021 iMac with Intel. Ever since updating to this version, the Bluetooth seems to crash about once a day (keyboard and touchpad disconnect, and bluetooth icon at top of screen changes to indicate "disabled").

Previously reliable Bose headphones often disconnect as well and I have to keep toggling the headphone connection to restore audio.

The system sometimes hangs for several minutes, then comes back. Yesterday it completely shut down for some reason and had to be restarted.

As has happened so many times before, I'm wishing I had never allowed it to update itself. Now it's offering to install Tahoe 26.2. Out of the frying pan, into the fire....

I got the Etrecheck, got a report, am trying to attach it here but the upload keeps failing and I get a message that says "An error occurred while uploading this log. Try again later." So I will try again in a bit.

No need to upload anything. It is a simple Copy/Paste, where you tap the Share Button in EtreCheck and choose Copy Report, then return here and after replying to a post, tap the icon below the reply that looks like a sheet of paper (Additional Text) and paste the report there.

Hi Mac Jim ID, Thank you, yeah, that's exactly what I'm doing. Got the "share report" copied to clipboard from Etrecheck, came here, open a reply, hit the "Additional Text" button, paste the report in there, hit Save, and then I get a blue loading wheelie and then the error message. I also took a screen shot of the error message and I can't attach it to this message, when I try to add an image it says "An error occurred while loading this image, please try again." Grrrr.

Is it bad form or against the rules to give a dropbox link? I could put the Etrecheck there and get a link for it.

Thank you.
