To create a text list of your movies without your MacBook Pro attempting to launch them, the most efficient method is to use a "copy-as-text" trick rather than dragging the files directly. Open your external drive in Finder, select all the movie files (Command + A), and copy them (Command + C). Next, open TextEdit, go to the Format menu and select Make Plain Text (Command + Shift + T); this is crucial, as "Rich Text" mode will try to embed the actual movie icons or files, whereas "Plain Text" only accepts the names. Once in plain text mode, simply paste (Command + V), and you will have a clean, printable list of your filenames. *******
