EMOJI button MIA in writing texts

I just updated my ipad to IOS 26. When I go to write a text, my emojis are not available. I checked my keyboards and I do have the emjois keyboard listed. In an empty text thread, there is no globe button or anything else that allows me to insert an emoji. How do I fix this issue, please?
