Messages unread status not syncing on iPhone, Mac, iPad

I am experiencing an issue where my messages are not syncing across all of my three devices, despite all of them being signed into the same Apple account. The devices involved are an iPhone 17 Pro Max (iOS 26.2), a Mac Studio (macOS Tahoe 26.2), and an iPad Pro 13" (iPadOS 26.2).

Even after reading and replying to messages on my iPhone, the Mac Studio and iPad Pro continue to show them as unread with a blue dot. To resolve this, I have already tried the following steps without success:

- Toggled Message settings off and on.

- Signed out and back into my Apple account on all three devices.

- Performed a network reset T-Mobile on my iPhone.

Any further suggestions to fix this synchronization issue?

Thank you 🙏

Hey there,

1.Confirm Messages in iCloud is truly active (and fully synced):

Even if it looks enabled, the sync process can silently stall.

On each device: iPhone / iPad

  • Settings → Apple Account → iCloud → Messages

  • Ensure:“Use on this iPhone/iPad” = ON

  • Status shows “Syncing” or “Synced”, not paused

Mac Studio

  • Messages → Settings → iCloud ~Ensure “Enable Messages in iCloud” is checked

  • Click “Sync Now”.

If any device shows “Waiting,” “Paused,” or doesn’t expose a Sync Now option, that device is usually the culprit.

2.Force a clean Messages-in-iCloud rebuild (most effective fix)

This is different from simply toggling Messages.

Step order matters:

  1. Turn OFF Messages in iCloud on ALL devices

  • Choose Disable & Download Messages (not “Remove”)

2.Wait 10–15 minute's

  • This lets iCloud finish detaching the message state.

3.Re-enable one device at a time, in this order:

  • iPhone
  • iPad
  • Mac

4.After enabling on each device:

  • Plugged into a power outlet (charging)

  • Connected to Wi-Fi.

  • Awake (screen on / Mac not sleeping)

  • Wait until it finishes syncing before enabling the next device

This rebuilds the read/unread state index in iCloud.

Hope these help!

These do not sync between devices. Photos, Notes, Reminders, Messages, etc.

Enabling iCloud for various functionalities such as Photos, Notes, Reminders, Messages, and more, as illustrated in the accompanying image, facilitates the seamless synchronization of each of these elements with iCloud through the internet.

Note: If you delete any or all data from one device, it will also be removed from iCloud and all other devices linked to the same Apple ID. Likewise, the reverse is true as well.
