Apple Watch screen stays on in sleep mode, drains battery

During the past weeek, the face of my watch now stays on whilst in sleep mode. Previously, it switched off unless I pressed the crown which I obviously didn’t do whilst asleep. With the screen continuously on whilst asleep, the watch runs out of power so I don’t get the health up-dates I need. How do I get the face to turn off during sleep mode ?

Did you also try to force restart your iPhone and Apple Watch?

To force restart your watch, press and hold the Digital Crown and the Side button together for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again.

If this does not solve the issue, and to rule out a software issue, erase the watch and pair it again, setting it up as a new device. You will only lose your created Watch faces and may have to activate the cards in your Wallet app again.

Many thanks for your suggestions. The watch has been set to “Aways On” but it’s only in the past week that it stays on during sleep mode. The screen used to switch off at the designated sleep time and turn on again at the designated wake time. Now, it stays on all the time despite there having been no changes to the settings. I have switched off and on both the phone and the watch to no avail.
