Touch ID no longer works.

Since MacOS Tahoe 26.2, touch ID no longer works on my 2021 Macbook Pro M1 or on my 2024 Macbook Pro M2. Disabling then re-enabling Touch ID in settings works for a while, then stops working again. The same with deleting then re-adding fingerprints. Rebooting doesn't help, period. Both my MBPros use Apple power connectors and cables, so that isn't the problem: the operating system is. Community threads about this issue have been going for months. When is Apple going to fix this already?

I had the same issue, caused by a cheap USB-C power supply I have for occasional use.

Unplugging the cable solved the issue immediately. May also be caused by other power sources like screens with USB-C power output etc.

Please check, and if TouchID works for you while your MB runs on battery upvote DenizKartell439's answer. BIG THANK YOU, IT DROVE ME CRAZY!

2021 iMac with Apple M1 chip working in OS 26.5.1.

Touch ID stopped working.

In "System Settings" under Touch ID and Password, the function had been turned off (not by any users of the computer), and the button was grayed out and did not respond. Trying to add a new finger print: function did not work.

I deleted the old fingerprints (which had functioned without a hitch since 2021) to re-enter them. Now in System Settings, the "Touch ID & Password" option has disappeared from the side-bar.

Touch ID no longer works.
