External Hard Drive Not Showing up on new MacBook Air

I have a fairly new MacBook Air, first time Mac user. I am trying to download a large amount of files and purchased an external hard drive to do it. I got about 1/10 of the way through and my external hard drive stopped showing up on my desktop/finder. I already went into Finder settings and verified that External drives is checked. I have restarted and then completely rebooted the laptop twice. I can't find any other possibilities for a solution other than the cable, but the cable is brand new -- just pulled it out today when I started downloading. I put it into the laptop, and nothing happens, it doesn't register anything at all. Any other ideas? This is super time sensitive. Thank you!

Tell us more about the new external drive.

Brand, model and capacity, please.

Did you initialize the drive before putting it in service or did you just connect it right out of the box?

It's always a good idea to initialize (reformat) a new drive using Disk Utility before you start using it.

Erase the drive and use the GUID partition scheme and the APFS format.

Initialize an external storage device in Disk Utility on Mac - Apple Support (CA)

Also, do not use any drive utility that may have shipped from the drive manufacturer. They are unneeded and often cause interference with macOS's proper use of the drive.
