Apple Maps 'visited places' data in iOS 26?

I just learned Apple Maps has been tracking my “visited places” for months; ever since the rollout of iOS 26. Where are these data stored? Who has access to the data? Why was this not clearly communicated when iOS 26 was installed? It feels just plain creepy.

Any such information is stored on your device and is accessible only to you. Significant Locations has been part of iOS for years; it its not new.

This feature, known as ‘Significant Location’, was introduced around iOS 8, approximately 10-11 versions earlier.

While you might not see a list of your frequently visited places on your iPhone, your device is cleverly learning your routines behind the scenes. This feature is called Significant Locations. It uses anonymized location data to understand where you spend the most time, like your home, workplace, or favorite gym.

But How Does It Help?

Even though you can't directly view your Significant Locations, this information is used to personalize your iPhone experience in several ways:

  • Maps: Get a heads-up about traffic delays on your regular commute or receive suggestions for nearby restaurants based on your lunchtime location.
  • Calendar: See estimated travel times when adding event locations, making scheduling appointments a breeze.
  • Photos: Enhance your memories with automatic location tags, helping you remember exactly where that picture-perfect moment happened.

Taking Control

While Significant Locations are a convenient feature, you always have the option to disable it or clear the data entirely. This will reset the personalized features that rely on this information.

Here's how to access Significant Locations:

  1. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security.
  2. Tap Location Services.
  3. Select System Services.
  4. Choose Significant Locations.

From there, you can review the feature or choose to turn it off completely.

Transparency is critical to the human perception of trust. I first became aware of this “feature” when Apple Maps (iOS 26) prompted me to confirm I had visited several places and locations. Double U Tee Eff?

The “appearance" of an intrusive data mining application created by Apple, whether my interpretation was real or not, was rather disquieting.

It is now disabled.

You're certainly welcome to disable location services. But in doing so, what exactly have you accomplished? As has been explained, Apple has no access to any of the data on your phone, including any location you've ever visited. But location services bring benefits, such as using GPS. Stolen Device Protection. A host of other good things. Sometimes being paranoid isn't a good thing. It's of course your phone and you can what you want, but you might also want to read this --> About privacy and Location Services in iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS - Apple Support

As a general security and privacy best practice, if you don't plan to use the feature to your benefit you should disable it:

  1. Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services (very bottom of the list) > Significant Locations & Routes > toggle to OFF
  2. Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services (very bottom of the list) > Significant Locations & Routes > Clear History
