iPad setup error: 'Unable to Download Profile Configuration

ipad set up issues

Hi. I bought a restored iPad. I don’t know the generation, it was built in 2016 & is the 9.7 size. It’s supposed to be an iPad Pro. It came in an unmarked box with no information. I bought it primarily yo use an an ereader for reading books.

I was attempting to set it up & the screen instructions suggested I use my iPhone to set it up, which I enabled. But it didn’t set up. Instead I received an error message “Unable to Download Profile Configuration

An internet connection is required to download the configuration for this profile. To continue, you can try again or choose a Wi-Fi network.

Try Again

Choose Wi-Fi Network

Unable to Download Profile Configuration“

And it is stuck at this point. I have no idea what to do, if there is even anything that can be done. I’ve tried repeatedly to try again and even choose WiFi network and enter it manually, but this is always the result. Apparently there is no way to reset the set up to manually.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

With your iPad attempting to download a configuration profile, the iPad is (or at least was) a device managed or owned by an Enterprise or Educational establishment. As such, unless the configuration profile is removed by the organisation that manages the device, it would be unusable by you or anyone else.

Apple will not assist with removal of management profiles. The only way to remove a management profile is to seek assistance directly from the System Administrator who manages the device.

Here is what Apple suggests when purchasing a previously used device:

Check for Activation Lock before you buy a device from someone else

Before you buy an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, from someone other than Apple or an authorized Apple reseller, make sure that the device is erased and no longer linked to the previous owner’s account. Follow these steps to check if the device is ready to use:

  1. Turn on and unlock the device.
  2. If the passcode lock screen or the Home screen appears, the device hasn't been erased. Ask the seller to completely erase the device by going to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. Don't take ownership of any used iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch until it's been erased.
  3. Begin the device setup process.
  4. If you're asked for the previous owner’s Apple ID and password, the device is still linked to their account. Hand the device back to the seller and ask them to enter their password. If the previous owner isn't present, contact them as soon as possible and ask them to use a browser to remove the device from their account. Don't take ownership of any used iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch until it has been removed from the previous owner’s account.

You will know that a device is ready for you to use when you're asked to "Set up your iPhone," “Set up your iPad," or “Set up your iPod” the first time you turn it on.

Purchasing a pre-owned device from a third-party seller is risky. One of our senior contributors also penned this useful warning:
