My iPhone used to start downloading apps the second I hit the button, but now there’s a massive delay where I have to wait several minutes before the download even begins. Note that i can only download an app one at a time. I already tried restarting my phone and some of the common things they tell you to do on the internet but none of it works. How can i resolve this?

Check your Internet connection. If using cellular service to download, try using Wi-Fi. Those are the two points you can control. Conceivably it could be some part of the Internet beyond your control because the speed is determined by the slowest part between you and the source. I have no idea where in the world you are, how Apple sets up its downloading system, or the context of these downloads. I manually update apps on my iPhone over WiFi and when I tap "update all" sometimes it can take a few minutes, even over fast WiFi , for an app to download. Sometimes it will just download one by one, or if it does multiple apps then it takes a few minutes. It will rarely try to download more than two at the same time. The others just get added to the queue.
