iCloud external backups?
Have an external usb flash drive connected to an IPad mini 5.
Do need to use the Files app?
or lock into iCloud.com and backup from there?

You should be able to move files to the USB flash drive from your iPad.

You can't, however, do an actual backup to the flash drive. You can only back up to iCloud or a computer. I would imagine that if you back up to your computer, you can copy the backup file to your drive. You'd still need a computer to restore that file to the iPad.

I don't understand your question about iCloud in this context. If you're backing up to your Mac, iCloud has nothing to do with it.
iTunes is gone. You use the Finder now.

Am able to Files app and save iCloud files to usb external flash drive by MOVE function via iCloud.
