G- Drive Mobile USB-C not backing up

I have a G-drive mobile usb-c hard drive. I recently updated my mac to tahoe26.2 and now it is saying that a backup can not be completed and that the drive is "read only". My mac has not backed up in a few days. How do I resolve this?

There were a few prior posts on this forum from users who couldn’t access their external drive due to the drive manufacturer’s software that they used to encrypt the drive. Lacie/Seagate, Samsung, SanDisk, etc., all provide 'drive management' software on their drives and using such 3rd party software can cause issues when macOS is updated and the 3rd party software becomes incompatible. Not sure if that's the issue here, but FYI the best practice with a new external drive (SSD/HDD, not applicable to NAS drives) is to use Disk Utility to complete erase it, format it as GUID/APFS and apply encryption if desired.

Will this not delete all the files on the disk though? I want to save whats on it

Yes, in fact, it will delete all the files stored on that drive.

I empathize with your desire to save the data that's on the drive. This situation is a perfect example of why one should employ multiple backups of any important data. Take this opportunity to start another TM backup set on a new drive so you'll have a current and accessible backup of the data that now resides only on your computer.

Please tell us a little bit more about the drive.

How old is it?

What is the capacity?

How much free space does Disk Utility say it has?

What is the drive format?

You might run the diagnostic app Drive DX from Binary Fruit and see what it has to report about the overall health of the drive.

And +1 to the guidance provided by our friend @neuroanatomist regarding preparing a new drive for Mac use. 👍🏽
