Logic Pro 12: Missing Legacy/Ancient sounds

Hello everyone,

Sorry for my poor english.

I upgraded to logic pro 12 from last upgraded 11 version two days ago and

downloaded / installed all what wasn't from the new sounds library ( = a 94,27 Go Logic Pro Library.bundle exported to an external ssd).

In "Library" or hitting Y, before upgrading to V12, I could find some old stuff inside of Legacy/Ancient folder for each categories ( Such as Liverpool bass in "bass", Male rapper voice in "vocal" for instance etc.). Lots of this legacy and ancient stuff has become favorites.. but I'm unable to find it in V12.

Is it gone with V12 for the first time ?!? Is there a way to recover all this legacy/ancient material ?

Thank you a lot in advance !

Go to the Sound Library (Logic Pro menu). Click on "Manage Packs". You should be able to add the legacy Logic 10 sounds back. Mine were missing, also. I did this, it's all back. Be sure to update anything needing it, also.

I'm not an expert but I'll do what I can. =)

As for the Sampler Instruments folder, those .exs files are simply the files that you find when you create a software instrument track and use Sampler as your software for that track.

Open LP12 and create a software instrument track and choose Sampler (Multi-Sample) in the Instrument Slot on the track channel in your inspector. See screenshot.

Then open the Sampler. Do you see Liverpool Bass as in the screenshot below? If so, your .exs files are fine.

What I have in my Library/Application Support/Logic/Sampler Instruments folder:

My .bundle/Samples/z_Legacy/Bass folder which holds .aif files

And .bundle/Plug-In Settings/Sampler/z_Legacy/Bass folder

And .bundle/Channel Strip Settings/Instrument/03 Bass/02 Electric Bass folder and the .cst file, which is what you will see in the Library in LP12.

When I copied over the Channel Strip Settings folder into the .bundle file, that's when I started to see it in my Library.

I also copied over all of my old .patch files into the Patches folder that showed up in my Library

I hope this helps. If it is a programming bug then I hope it is fixed soon but after decades of computer use, it may be months, years, or never. But this workaround works for me.

If you right-click on Logic Pro Library.bundle, wherever you put it, you'll find that the .exs files found in the Library/Application Support/Logic/Sampler Instruments folder have been relocated to different folders in the .bundle file. File structure has completely changed.

For example, you'll find Liverpool Bass.exs now in Logic Pro Library.bundle/Plug-In Settings/Sampler/z_Legacy/Bass. Why LP is not reading these files is a programmer thing and I don't know how to rectify that.

In doing a huge search, I've discovered that within the LP12 app Contents/Resources folder, 3 folders have been removed that were previously in LP11 Contents/Resources;

  • AppleLoopsIndex (which is now located in the new LPL.bundle Apple Loops folder and the extensions have been changed from .loopdata to .caf, thus no replacing missing loops with old files.)
  • Patches (now found restructured in the LPL.bundle, however missing quite a few .patch files from LP11 Contents. Note that these files found in the .bundle, can also be found again in the LP12 app Contents/Resources/UniversalPatches which is new) I'm coming back to this later.
  • Sampler Instruments (everything in this folder has been relocated, from what I've seen so far, into the .bundle/Plug-In Settings/Sampler folder)

I've also noticed that any folder beginning with "z_" is not being recognized. Going to do an experiment here in a sec.

I have been successful of moving .patch files into the .bundle and they work! Just a workaround for the necessary patches.

Here's what I did:

  1. Created a folder named LP12, moved the new app into the folder. (I zipped and copied to another folder on an ext drive just in case.)
  2. Using Time Machine, I restored LP11 back to Applications. I never opened the app. (I had to use this method since I didn't properly backup the LP 11 app as I should have.)
  3. Right-clicking the LP 11 app, I opened Show Package Contents.
  4. Copied over the entire contents (2.49GB) to its own folder on an external drive for backup.
  5. Moved the LP11 to the Trash and placed the LP12 back into the Applications folder and deleted the LP12 folder.
  6. Right-click Logic Pro Library.bundle and Show Package Contents. Went to Patches/Audio/Effects/Reverb
  7. New Finder window and went to my backed up LP11 Contents/Resources/Patches/Audio/Effects/Reverb and copied over Darker Tone Large Garage.patch and pasted into the Reverb folder in the .bundle
  8. Opened LP12, went to the folder and viola! it was there and it worked.

Of course, it would take a long time to go through all of the missing patches. I would rather Apple take care of what's not fixed but this is a workaround if you're on a time crunch.

I'll let you know what happens on further experimentation.

OK! I think I found something. Here's what I did:

  • Right-click or Control-click on Logic Pro Library.bundle and choose Show Package Contents
  • In a separate Finder window, go to Library/Application Support/Logic and choose your Channel Strip Settings folder which should hold all your old settings from LP11.

  • Copy the entire Channel Strip Settings folder into the .bundle file

  • Legacy folder for Logic now appears in the Library and works for me.

Will sort through missing .patch files and place them in the appropriate folders as well.

It's not perfect and I have no idea how to do the GB legacy yet but if I come across it, I'll let you know. =)

Good luck everyone!

Hello dsparks66,

1- Most important: Following your "how to do", Legacy content is now back/visible in the Library (Y). Great !

As you advised, copying the "Channel strip Settings" at /Library/Application Support/Logic/ and pasting it to the .bundle did the trick. Thanks Again !

2- At " /Library/Application Support/Logic/ " on the main drive, in addition to the "Channel Strip Settings" folder, there are 7 other folders ( Alchemy samples, EXS Factory Samples, Plug-in Settings, Project Template, Sampler instruments, Samples and Ultrabeat Samples).

Did you do anything with those folders ? (The whole 8 folders are 73,18 Go large on my main disk and I wonder If I may delete them or not and if they migrated to LP 12).

3- - Before copying/pasting "Channel strip Settings" to .bundle, as you mentioned it in one of your answers, after creating a software instrument track and choosing Sampler (Multi-Sample), I could indeed find the legacy .exs such as Liverpool Bass.

So, you are right: .exs files were not lost although I couldn't find them, as I used to, in the Libray.

Indeed a programing issue: I own Logic Pro since 2009 and this is the very first time that I have any "issue" with it, have to deeply look in to tons of folders, copy/paste etc. And I must say that I wouldn't have been able alone to fix it without your help.

4- Just for information:

After Logic 12 first installation, 6days ago , whole new "Sounds library" downloaded, installed and updated, the .bundle was 94,27 Go large.

After yesterday re installation, everything downloaded/installed/updated again, it was... only 92,94 Go large !

Main difference coming from "Patches" content (and "Projects" = Normal as I deleted some):

6459 elements for 1,05 Go in "Patches" 6 days ago. vs 6459 elements for 663,2 Mo in "Patches" Yesterday: All files there in both cases, but with quite often different size (See an exemple screenshot for basses and piano).

Isn't it "strange" ?

Anyway, I used the .bundle saved after 1st installation and after pasting in to it "Channel strip settings", it is finally 94,35 Go large.

Thank you so much !

"NOK for"Sampler instruments" : lots of .exs missing (exemple with Electronic drum kit) in the LP 12 Sampler legacy library (see screenshot)"

Here is where I find those .exs files in my .bundle:

"NOK for "Samples-> Quick sampler" ( Can't find, in LP 12, any of the 64 .Audio AIFF located in the Quick sampler folder"

Here is where I find my .aif files in the .bundle:

"NOK for Ultrabeat Samples: Some sounds missing in LP12 (see screenshot)"

This one stumps me. I have the same issue. What I have discovered is that the missing sounds relate to the sample file extensions. The ones that have copied over and appear correctly in Ultrabeats, have both the .pst files and .aif files in their respective places. However, the ones missing have no .pst and have .ubs files instead of .aif files. Possibly no longer supported? It's the same with Apple Loops using .caf files and no longer using .loopdata files. Though I haven't tested to see if the .loopdata or .ubs files would work.

From the previous Library/Application Support/Logic folder, Adept Machine copied over correctly.

However, any sounds using .ubs, such as Afuche, have not copied.

I'll have to do some more digging and see what's going on. I hope this helps if anything to know why these particular sounds are different. The more you know...=)

In the end, this is a flaw on Apple's part and I hope they come out with a fix soon.

Jan 31, 2026 9:39 AM in response to Elfedelazik

I finally found that all the missing stuff is located on my main drive ( not in the "Sound Library" exported to the external ssd), at "/Library/Application Support/Logic/" and in "Sample instruments" folder there.

However, I have no idea of how to proceed in order to have this content showing up/ available in Logic Pro 12.

If anyone knows or have an idea of how to do this, I'd be grateful forever.

Hi guys,

Same problem here too: all my previous v10/11 Jam Packs and Legacy sounds are missing in the new v12 library.

Strangely, when I open an older v11 project, the JP and Legacy sounds are still there but none can be found in the actual v12 library. I have tried deleting LP12 and all its v12 packs, re-downloading everything and updating every single possible sound library that v12 has to offer and still nothing! (Interestingly, I am offered only a grand total of 43.42GB to download for all packs, including JPs and Legacy ones).

Looking in my /Library/Application Support/Logic folder (70GB large), my Sampler Instruments folder is only 97.8MB large so that can't be the source of the JP and Legacy sounds. My Alchemy Samples and EXS Factory Samples are 16GB & 53GB large respectively but I wouldn't know what to do with them to make them "active".

Very keen to help troubleshoot with you guys until we get this sorted out, as long as it takes!

No worries! There are no dumb questions.

If you create an audio "Guitar / line" track, not a Midi instrument one, do you also see the legacy content in the library window ?

Yes, but note they will be different.

When I have the Audio track selected, my library shows the appropriate settings that I can use on that audio track. This is the library that will show whether choosing mic/line or guitar/bass.

When I have the Software Instrument track selected, the library contents change but shows legacy settings that I can use with that track. This will also be the same library when creating Session and Pattern tracks as well, regardless of what you choose in the submenu for choosing the track, (Drummer, Bass, Keyboard). With the exception of External MIDI tracks...

External MIDI tracks will show this library, which of I haven't really dove into yet. I'm still learning. =)

UPDATE:

This will show you how much of noob I am...I just found out that I can simply drag and drop the missing .caf files from the Library/Audio/Apple Loops folder right into the Loops Browser in Logic Pro. That's it.

Of course, I would have to go through over 6000 loops to add but...a simple fix.

And it remains a MIDI loop, it doesn't convert to an Audio loop. =)

After checking:

"Sampler Instruments":

My .bundle looks like yours but:

  • It misses lots of . exs files found in the saved "old" Sampler Instruments (from /Library/Application Support/Logic): See "infos" on screenshots => 169 elements in the .bundle vs 206 elements in the Libray/Application support for the Electronic Drum kits folder (I only checked this one as my brain is starting to burn !)
  • In LP 12, using Sampler and looking in to the legacy/Drums and percussions/Electronic Drums libray.. I can't find files present in both the .bundle and the Library/application support folders such as, for instance, all the .exs whose names star with a "a" (Above and beyond , Absolute zero etc.)
  • Assuming that Sampler instruments from Library/Application support are located in the Sampler/z-Legacy folder on the.bundle; The whole difference ( not only for the tested "Electronic drums" part) is consequent: 2318 legacy elements vs 1729 for the.bundle.

Samples-> Quick Sampler: Yes, you are right: I could find the 64 .AIFF files located in different sub folders of the "Sample" folder in the .bundle.

But, at least using Sampler in LP12, I couldn't find in LP12 , for instance, the 5 Female vocal samples (Ah short, Ba Dap Bo, Da, La Lo, Relaxed melody), all found in both the .bundle and Library/Application Support/Logic "QuickSampler" from before upgrade to LP 12.

Those .AIIF files are on the.bundle but I don't know what has to be used in LP12 in order to be able to see them and choose them.

  • I didn't find anyhing new about Ultrabeats !
