Robotic Sound and Audio Breakup on AirPods Pro (3rd Generation) After Recent Updates
After upgrading to iOS 26.2.1, my AirPods Pro (3rd generation), model A3064, firmware 8B34, no longer work properly during phone calls.
During calls, the left and right AirPods constantly cut in and out and produce a robotic, distorted sound. Both parties on the call are unable to hear each other clearly. However, when switching the call audio to the iPhone 15 Pro Max speaker, the sound is crystal clear.
Troubleshooting steps performed:
- Unpaired the AirPods from the iPhone
- Performed a hard reset on the AirPods
- Reset network settings on the iPhone
- Paired the AirPods back to the iPhone issue persisted
- Paired the AirPods to a MacBook Air running macOS 26.2 and tested via FaceTime no audio issues
- Tested again on the iPhone issue returned
- Forced an iPhone update using a Mac and cable
- Paired the AirPods back to the iPhone issue persisted
- Disabled all AirPods-related settings no change
- Cleaned the AirPods speakers and microphones using a Q-tip and isopropyl alcohol
- Tested again on the iPhone issue still present
After completing all of these troubleshooting steps, the evidence points to a firmware or software compatibility issue.
This problem did not occur prior to updating either the iPhone software or the AirPods firmware.
