Robotic Sound and Audio Breakup on AirPods Pro (3rd Generation) After Recent Updates

After upgrading to iOS 26.2.1, my AirPods Pro (3rd generation), model A3064, firmware 8B34, no longer work properly during phone calls.

During calls, the left and right AirPods constantly cut in and out and produce a robotic, distorted sound. Both parties on the call are unable to hear each other clearly. However, when switching the call audio to the iPhone 15 Pro Max speaker, the sound is crystal clear.

Troubleshooting steps performed:

  1. Unpaired the AirPods from the iPhone
  2. Performed a hard reset on the AirPods
  3. Reset network settings on the iPhone
  4. Paired the AirPods back to the iPhone issue persisted
  5. Paired the AirPods to a MacBook Air running macOS 26.2 and tested via FaceTime no audio issues
  6. Tested again on the iPhone issue returned
  7. Forced an iPhone update using a Mac and cable
  8. Paired the AirPods back to the iPhone issue persisted
  9. Disabled all AirPods-related settings no change
  10. Cleaned the AirPods speakers and microphones using a Q-tip and isopropyl alcohol
  11. Tested again on the iPhone issue still present

After completing all of these troubleshooting steps, the evidence points to a firmware or software compatibility issue.

This problem did not occur prior to updating either the iPhone software or the AirPods firmware.

Update 2: So it seems this is a issue with the

Personalized Volume

Adjusts the volume of media in response to your environment.

when this is turned off you get the Robotic sound and breaking up! But if you turn it on the Robotic sound and break up goes away!

So this seems to be some kind of Bug in this you should be able to turn off and on in a quiet room with no media running.

I will now check this with all Apps on the device closed and will give a new Update!

Thank you so much for hanging with me in this disturbing matter.

Troubleshooting AirPods Static:

A. Interference:

It may be interference that getting in the way here.

Some Links in Regards to Interference:

No Succes?...

B. Get this Diagnosed by Apple:

So set up a Genius Bar Appointment at your local Apple Store. There, it would be looked at and diagnosed with an issue. Apple will provide you with your options form here.

Inference could be an issue but that does not apply if it happens outside of the environment that the unit was tested at first.

Going to the Genius bar is a waste of time! Why because I use to be a store Genius then Senior Advisor for Apple care support. Apple will not admit a flaw in products or software, but your right feedback at Apple is a great tool for Apple engineers to use when building software and products.

The only option at this point is to wait for a fix and hope it happens soon. I could call support and see if there is a bulletin on the issue or article they have that is not listed as a work around. But I know the process and it’s only going to be a wait or as a known issue working on it as I had to say many of times about Apple tech issue.

Thank you for replying to the post.

You are welcome.

A. Update these AirPods to the Latest Firmware:

Connect and pair these to a device that itself is already connected to the Internet. The firmware will be updated itself. Ethernet may be the bet route to take, as it would provide a more reliable connection. For a more-realty Mac, this would be the adapter to use: Belkin USB-C to 2.5Gb Ethernet Adapter - Apple

B. Also, report it.

Just reporting the issue has returned for me, and this is upgrading to the Pro 3’s from the 1’s in hopes the issue would be fixed.

I am also on the 15 Pro Max and running the latest firmware for the AirPods and iOS but the Personalized Audio trick doesn’t work for me…. I know Apple enjoys their Planned Obsolecense strategy but this is ridiculous.

It does seem it has come back and to be honest the AirPod pro 3s now just don’t have the same clear sound as when they first came out. I have tested on the Mac Air M2 but on the iPhone 15 pro max it seems they did something because I just don’t care to use them anymore. They were so clear before until they had to do some kind of update that has cause an issue. I know Apple they will not admit fault to anything and will keep ponding it off. I know worked for them for 12plus years as a senior tech.
