Requirement to enable Siri for carplay

Why do i have to enable siri now to enable apple carplay? I have never used Siri and I still don’t want to. I can’t use my maps or receive text messages without enabling Siri with this last update. It feels like coercion to invade my privacy.

What I'm curious to know is how you've somehow managed to use CarPlay without Siri. Enabling Siri for CarPlay has been a requirement for some time now.

To your question as to why, we are all users here, on this user to user only forum. Apple neither participates nor reads these posts for user feedback. As users only, we cannot answer why questions at all. Suffice to say, Siri is and has been required for CarPlay for a long time. And that is all anyone here can tell you.

We can certainly guess, however. CarPlay is meant to be as hands free as possible, while giving you the option to interact with some important features on your iPhone. In order to do so, something has to be able to hear you if you want to do certain things handsfree, which is far safer while you are driving your car. And that something which can hear you to perform commands is Siri. I'm not sure why that would be difficult to understand? Siri is nothing more than a digital assistant. There's nothing nefarious about Siri. And the simple fact is if you want to use Apple features, you have to use them the way Apple designed them to work. Apple owns iOS, not us. We only have a license to use iOS.

I’ve used my phone, paired wirelessly with my car, since I bought it new. I didn’t have to use CarPlay to get my messages via audio system for the first 6-8 months. The dealership was as surprised as I was, when it wouldn’t work anymore without enabling CarPlay. This was just over 2 years ago, so no, it hasn’t been a requirement.

Two days ago, I received a notification on my car screen must enable Siri to use CarPlay, so no, it hasn’t been a requirement since 2014.

I haven’t done research, but those are the facts in my case.

What is it you're hoping anyone on this user to user only forum is going to do for you? Arguing your point won't change reality. If you just want to use Bluetooth to connect your iPhone to your cars system, that is NOT CarPlay and you may not need to have Siri enabled for a simple Bluetooth connection. But if you want to use CarPlay, you DO have to use Siri. There is nothing anyone on this forum can do to change that.

Because that's how Apple designed it. We are not Apple. We can't answer any question as to "why" Apple made the design choice they did.

You're free to not use CarPlay if you don't like the way it works.

As we've been telling you, Siri has been required to use CarPlay for some time. You'll have to decide whether you want to use CarPlay or not use CarPlay. But if you want to use it, you'll have use Siri. It's that simple.

There may have been a time a few years ago, where it might have been possible to use CarPlay without Siri with a wired connection. But that option hasn't existed for a long time and my research shows that Siri has been required to use Apple CarPlay since its launch in 2014, and this requirement has remained consistent over time.  CarPlay evolved from Siri Eyes Free, a feature that relied on Siri for voice commands and hands-free control, and Apple has always integrated Siri as a core component of the CarPlay experience.

The connection is wireless. Had this car for over 2 years and have used my phone with it. When I first bought the car, I loved that my text messages came through the audio system. About 6-8 months later, I would no longer receive the messages through my audio system, unless I enabled CarPlay. I had not changed any settings on my phone or car, so I took it to the dealer. They checked it out and learned the same happened when they tested their own phone to it. They checked other vehicles on the lot and same thing. Turns out, I had done an update on my phone and now I could only get text messages via audio system, by enabling CarPlay. Same with their phones and other vehicles. They said it was not a change through the car manufacturer, so must’ve been through iPhone. Not what I wanted, as I liked the car manufacturers navigation system but in the end opted to get text messages via audio system, for obvious safety reasons.

I get in my car a couple days ago, enable CarPlay and I get a message on my car screen that I must turn on Siri in my phone settings to use CarPlay. I’ve changed nothing on my phone or car settings, but just like the prior issue, I did recently do an iOS update. Tried multiple times, checked settings to see if something had erroneously changed, same thing.

I don’t use Siri, I don’t want to use Siri. I don’t want it enabled on my phone.

I will try to delete my phone device from my car and reinstall it to see if that works.

CarPlay integration with Siri is not always the iOS update's fault!  Many things can cause phone problems.  If you tell people you think it's an iOS update, it might make it harder to fix or find a solution for the real issue.

It is, however, an iOS requirement. So I'm not sure how the rest of your post applies.

Remember, the right question often leads to the solution!

Was/Is your device Jailbroken? If that's the situation, please be informed that attributing the issues to iOS updates may not be accurate.

iOS updates aim to enhance user experience, boost security, and fix bugs rather than disrupt core features. The majority of the issues after updates might stem from underlying, unmentioned factors. Updates won't typically alter personal data but may refine settings or features. Backup before major updates for safety. Review Apple's update details and backup advice for a smooth process.

Kindly consider checking your settings and addressing any device issues before attributing the issue to external factors. This could be a pure coincidence that the iOS update affected the iPhone functions.

Before initiating a standard iOS update, it's advisable to create a backup. Have you completed this step? If yes, proceed with the restoration from the backup.

Use your car’s built-in controls to operate CarPlay

Cars that support CarPlay should have built-in controls, such as a touchscreen, rotary knob or touchpad. To find out how to operate your CarPlay display, check the manual that came with your car. You can also use Siri to control CarPlay, even if you have built-in controls.

Find out more about the common controls used in cars supported by CarPlay.

Use Siri to control CarPlay --> Use CarPlay with your iPhone - Apple Support (IN)

Depending on your car, there are three ways you can use Siri to control CarPlay:

  • Press and hold the voice command button on your steering wheel. Then ask Siri a question or to do something.
  • Touch and hold the CarPlay Dashboard or CarPlay Home button on your touchscreen. Then ask Siri a question or to do something.
  • If your vehicle supports “Hey Siri”, say “Hey Siri”. Then ask Siri a question or to do something. Go to Settings > Siri & Search, and make sure Listen for "Hey Siri" is turned on.

Siri will also make suggestions in CarPlay about what you may want to do next, such as drive to your next meeting. Siri Suggestions and CarPlay work seamlessly to keep your favourite apps at your fingertips.

If you have HomeKit-enabled accessories, such as a garage door opener, you can use the Siri Suggestions that appear on the CarPlay Dashboard, or you can simply ask Siri to do things for you, such as “Open the garage door” when you’re close to your house.

CarPlay with iOS 26:

  • A new design with Liquid Glass helps make each interaction area of the Dashboard distinct, and provides a new tab bar design for easy navigation in apps
  • Compact design for incoming calls makes it easy to keep your eyes on the upcoming turn in your favourite navigation app
  • Tapbacks in Messages gives you a simple way to react to messages while driving, like with a thumbs-up or a heart
  • Pinned conversations appear at the top of Messages, making it easy to get to your most frequent conversations
  • Widgets stacks can be found to the left of the Dashboard, so you can stay on top of your favourite apps at a glance
  • Live Activities appear automatically on the Dashboard, making it easy to keep track of real-time events on the go

If you're still having trouble with your car's audio system using CarPlay or Bluetooth, try the Aux cable. To get it fixed, there are two options:

  1. Take your car to a reputable car dealer or car audio specialist. They have experienced technicians who can diagnose the problem with the Aux cable. This could be a loose connection, a faulty cable itself, or an issue with the system's Aux port. They'll be able to repair the issue or recommend a replacement cable if needed.
  2. Consult your car's infotainment system manuals. These manuals often include troubleshooting sections that might address common Aux cable problems. You might find instructions for resetting the system, cleaning the Aux port, or confirming the cable's compatibility.

Before taking your car to a dealer, it's always a good idea to check the manuals first. This can sometimes save you time and money if it's a simple fix you can handle yourself. However, if the manuals don't offer a solution, or you're uncomfortable tinkering with the system, then a car audio specialist is the way to go.
