This is about providing a new security certificate that will let services like iMessages and FaceTime continue to work after January of 2027.
Apple recently released a slew of updates to iOS/iPadOS 12, 15, 16, 18, and 26 that are documented as, or appear to be, aimed at the same thing. (They should release one for iPadOS 17, too. Some iPads can't update past it.)
I have no idea if Apple plans similar updates for any versions of macOS prior to Catalina.

This legit Apple support document shows it:

There are some reports today from other senior contributors that the download was slow. Might wait until you have time to deal with it. Servers get hit hard on the first few days of a new release.
Yes, I just updated our 2012 Mac mini server to 10.15.8 and all went well.

I have an old MacBookAir with only 10 Go left on the system drive and installed this update yesterday.
Surprisingly, it took 30 minutes to be done, with a progress bar stuck at zero the first 10 minutes.
Then, I had to enter my password twice to log in.
But everything is back to normal.
I CANT GET THIS UPDATE TO RUN PROPERLY, ITS CAUSING MY MAC PROBLEMS
I’ve tried three times now to install the update OS 10.15.8 and every time l gave the same problem.
Once the update is installed, upon restart, l can’t log into my user account, as l get the beachball every time, l then have to re-boot in into recovery mode and reinstall from Time Machine back -up.
Everything is working perfectly until l install the update. I even tried installing from SAFE mode, but that’s no good as this update requires a restart pre - installation so even if l initiate the update in safe mode, it re- boots and installs in normal mode, or so it seems.
Does anyone have any tips on how to install this software without causing issues?
Thanks Claus
The software is installing ok. The computer shuts down at the beginning of installation and installs software fairly quickly. The problem arises once the software update is installed, the computer reboots but dosen't fully reboot, it gets stuck. (should I leave it? when you say it take a long time, what part of the installation is taking a long time? the te computer does full reboot, i then have triouble logging in to users, as i have two user accounts on this machine. It is normal for macOS installations to go from the load screen to black screen several times before completing. Any interference like disconnecting the power or pushing the power button can cause the installation to fail.
Yikes… I may have accidentally “super bugged” the Catalina software running on my old MacBook Air… and Apple genuinely has no idea how to fix the overwhelmingly horrific cyber attack that is STILL ongoing, but has already resulted in identity theft, fraudulent bank transactions, and my government accounts being taken over. There’s been absolutely nothing done to help recover any of my data, I was simply told over and over again “there’s nothing we can do” or “we can take a report about the security issue and your concerns”.
To add insult to injury, the FTC only takes reports and/or complaints, they don’t actually DO anything to help if your identity is stolen.
The “security” measures in place on Catalina were nearly nonexistent and actually allowed someone to remotely access my account, then they essentially just played out the biggest takedown ever over the next 3 weeks.
So honestly, I would download that security update if I were you lol.
It shows on my screen but just reboots and then shows it again. I can't get out of this loop! I even deleted several items in case I was low on space. I'm going to see if Geek Squad (my son) can help once he gets home.

"den.thed" is my helping hand, on this!
Reinstalling the OS, is also an opportunity?
MacOS Catalina 10.15.7 is on the App Store!
Hej Nielseriksen.
