Hello,
There are different ways to ensure the highest iOS that your device will support is installed on your device. When updating, your device will update to the highest version currently available that it will support, or it will just say it is up to date (and can't go any higher) and won't install anything. If you want to run a higher system version than your current device is capable of running, you need to buy a newer device.
For the latest version check Apple security releases - Apple Support
Any equipment currently running iOS 12.5.8 can't be updated to anything higher.
An iPhone 5S, 6, or 6plus, will only update to iOS 12.5.8
iPhones 6S through 7, and SE(gen. 1), will only update to iOS 15.8.6
An iPhone 8 to X (just a plain X) will update to 16.7.14
iPhones XS, XS Max, and XR will update to iOS 18.7.4
iPhones 11 and later, and SE gen 2 or later, will only update to the latest iOS 26 version (26.2.1)
This support article has instructions about updating an iPhone or iPad wirelessly --> Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support Read the article for recommended criteria for being able to use wireless updating.
You can also use Mac and PC computers to update system software --> Update iOS on iPhone - Apple Support
If you have an iPhone X, it cannot update to the latest version, iOS 26. Nor can it update to iOS 17 or 18. For that phone, iOS 16 is the end of the line.

It's not clear what you mean by "10 X". There is no such model. There is an X and I mentioned earlier what it can do in terms of updating.
As I said earlier, frankly the easiest way to tell if you can update is to just try:
If you can then you can.
If you cannot then you cannot.
If you can, you won't be given any choice as to which version.
