Thank you for your question to the community, and thank you for including your Mac OS version .

We can't tell whether you are an experienced user, or a beginner, so please excuse if some info. is not needed.

Apple support's article (link below) explains the basics of making an audio call.

(It's possible some small, but necessary detail is being overlooked.)

Make and receive calls in FaceTime on Mac - Apple Support

Eg: says:

Make a call

"You can make a FaceTime call to anyone who’s using an Apple device,

as long as your Mac and their device meet FaceTime requirements or Group FaceTime requirements.

  1. Go to the FaceTime app  on your Mac.
  2. Click New FaceTime.
  3. Type a phone number, an email address or a name from your contacts list, then press Return. (You can also click a contact under Suggested.)
  4. To make a Group FaceTime call, enter each person’s contact information in the To field. You can add up to 32 participants.
  5. Do any of the following:
    • Make a FaceTime call: Click  to make a video call,
    • or clicnext to  and choose FaceTime Audio.

Info on what to do: If you can’t make or receive calls in FaceTime on Mac - Apple Support

Eg: says:

If you can’t call a specific person in FaceTime

  • You may need to choose a different way to call.

When a person’s name is blue, they have an Apple Account and you can reach them directly using FaceTime. When a person’s name is green, you can click Invite with Messages to send them a text message with a link. When a person’s name is red, they can’t be reached using Messages. You should create and share a FaceTime link instead.

______________

On another tack:

  • Check you do not have "Do Not Disturb" turned on

  • Check the microphone isn't in use with another app (eg: Voice memos" etc.)

  • Check audio is not on "mute"

(1) Click microphone with cross through icon in FaceTime (removes the "crossed through" to allow microphone)

(2) On Mac: Click Apple menu () > System Settings / Sound :

Check sliders for output and input are near the middle

Ensure "mute" is unticked
