Since the iPhone 15 has a USBc port, you can plug in nearly anything! You can plug in a drive, select pictures, choose Share>Save to Files, and navigate to your external drive. It's never been easier.
I don't much like thumb drives, because they are stupefyingly slow and frustratingly unreliable. But they're cheap. If I were going to use a thumb drive, I'd buy two reputable brands and double up on the backups. Of course, it'd take twice as long…
Portable SSDs are way better, but their prices keep rising as fast as everything else, often passing $100/TB. It's hard to find solid state drives smaller than 500 GB. I'd say look for something faster than 200MB/s-- and if they don't tell you the speed, it's because they're embarrassed. I saw this (no longer available) on Amazon :
which says "allowing for super fast transfer speed at up to 5 Gbit/s." Notice the "Gbit." A bit is only 1/8 of a byte, so this means "up to" 0.6 GB/s, 600 MB/s, which is fast enough, but I kind of resent the obfuscation. So be careful! (I'm editing-- it now says it's available-- 10 minutes later?)
Anyway, backing up pictures to a portable drive is easy and essential. Two is better.
