Do you have a VPN installed on your Mac? Turning off may not solve the problem and it may be necessary to uninstall the VPN. If you had previously removed a VPN by dragging it to the trash, there are likely still remnant files running on startup that are preventing the connection. One way to check if that is the case is by posting the free EtreCheck report using the Additional Text option when posting. No personal information is provided in the report.

  • Are you attempting to call someone that does not have an Apple device?
  • Do you have an iPhone linked to your computer to make calls?

A Mac on its own can only make FaceTime calls to another Apple device. The receiver of the call would have to have FaceTime turned on in order to receive the call. Here are 2 support articles specific to using FaceTime on your Mac.

Another trouble shooting step you can try is booting into Safe Mode. This will take extra time to boot and your Desktop will appear different, but try making a FaceTime call in Safe Mode, then reboot again normally to exit Safe Mode and compare your results. How you boot into Safe Mode depends on if you have an Intel Mac or Silicon Mac and the Support Article notes the different steps and how do determine which Mac you have if you do not know.

The previous question about if you had a VPN installed is because that may block network connections needed to make a FaceTime call even if everything is set up correctly. If you do have a VPN, then you would first want to remove it using the uninstaller for that specific VPN.

If you are unsure if you installed a VPN or did not remove one correctly, then the link in the previous post to provide the EtreCheck report can be useful to identify if there is one running on your computer. There are step by step instructions included in that link to first download EtreCheck, then post the report here using the Additional Text option when posting.

I apologize, I have been out of town and haven't been able to troubleshoot. I cannot make or receive FT calls only on my iMac. I am able to do it on my iPhone. The people that I usually FT have apple devices. This is puzzling to me, as I had no issues up until the previous two updates on my iMac. As I mentioned before, I am a level 1 user and some of the steps that you have given to me are very unfamiliar and I worry about making this worse.

Please help, if you can. Thank you!
