Cannot add Gmail to iMessage

Is the Gmail account used as an Apple Account? Because if it is solely a Gmail account, that won’t work with Apple Messages,

If you’re looking to send messages to a Gmail account, that too won’t work. You’ll need to send to an Apple Account, or to a telephone number for SMS or RCS.
