Solution / Workaround
There is currently no native way in iOS to set separate ringer/notification volume levels for AirPods and the iPhone speaker.
The “Ringer and Alerts” slider is global, so lowering it affects both AirPods and the built-in speaker.
However, you can create an automatic workaround using the Shortcuts app.
Workaround: Automatically Adjust Ringer Volume When AirPods Connect
The idea:
- When AirPods connect → lower ringtone/alert volume
- When AirPods disconnect → restore normal ringtone/alert volume
This effectively simulates separate notification volume levels.
Step 1 – Create a Shortcut to Lower Ringtone Volume
- Open Shortcuts
- Tap + to create a new shortcut
- Add action: Set Volume
- Tap on “Volume” inside the action and change it to Ringtone
- Set it to a lower value (for example 20–30%)
- Name it something like: “Set Ringtone Volume Low”

Step 2 – Create a Shortcut to Restore Normal Volume
- Create another shortcut
- Add action: Set Volume
- Change the target from “Volume” to Ringtone
- Set it to your normal preferred level (for example 60–70%)
- Name it something like: “Set Ringtone Volume Default”

Step 3 – Create Automation for When AirPods Connect
- In Shortcuts, go to Automation
- Tap + to Create Personal Automation
- Choose Bluetooth
- Select your AirPods
- Add action → Run Shortcut
- Choose “Set Ringtone Volume Low”
- Select Run Immediately

Step 4 – Create Automation for When AirPods Disconnect
Repeat the process:
- Create another Bluetooth automation
- Select your AirPods
- Choose trigger: When Disconnected
- Run shortcut → “Set Ringtone Volume Default”
- Select Run Immediately

Result
- Notifications are quieter in AirPods
- iPhone speaker ringtone remains at normal volume
- No manual adjustments needed
- No need to use “Reduce Loud Sounds”
Until Apple provides separate ringer volume per output device, this workaround provides consistent behavior.
