On-Going issues with Mac mini M4 after Tahoe 26 1. 26. 2 updates

Since updating my Mac mini M4 to Tahoe 26.1 and 26.2, my confidence in Apple has dropped to zero. I sincerely hope others haven’t experienced a similar ordeal.

My Mini became roughly 20% slower when transferring data between two NAS units compared with my 2017 iMac running Ventura — using identical Cat6 cabling, network paths, and switches.

Soon afterward, I lost access to iMessage completely and was unable to sign in. Apple replaced the logic board, which fixed that issue but introduced more — sluggish data transfers, inconsistent access to recovery mode, Command–D diagnostics taking over 30 minutes, slow mouse and keyboard response, and intermittent freezing with my Dell monitor.

Apple replaced the logic board, SSD, and power supply once more, but the new power board was dead on arrival, so they reinstalled the original one. Performance remained unchanged. They then proposed replacing all three units again, which felt like a trial-and-error approach rather than targeted troubleshooting.

The Mac is still under warranty (with AppleCare), and multiple house calls have already occurred. I suspect Apple’s service costs now exceed the price of a replacement unit.

After considerable persistence, Apple eventually agreed to replace the Mini entirely. It’s been over two weeks since that agreement, and I’m still waiting for the replacement despite returning the original device promptly.

After more than 13 years as an Apple user, this experience has left me deeply disappointed — to the point where I’m even considering switching platforms, something I never imagined saying. Has anyone else faced similar reliability or support issues since the Tahoe updates?

Yes. I've been through this myself.

Troubleshooting a Patience. Pays Off:

During the days of COVID, I had to send in my 2017 MacBook Pro eleven times and receive it eleven times back. The screen would flicker. I was told that I troubleshot with Apple over-the-hone for an excessive over 100 hours. Having been so patient of a customer, I was granted a $5K USB 2018 MacBook Pro for no ore than the price of AppleCare+($325 at the time). So, being patient, and working with them, indeed, does pay off to get a great deal on a swap out. I sure learned a load about troubleshooting during the process. So, I wouldn't consider it an issue, being that $325 is roughly the same price I would be paying for a new printer with all the add-ons of ink I'd have to pay for.

Later on, another Mac flickered, but I was able to fix it by clearing the caches, through some commands that contained F5.

I was talking to Apple trying to track down when they were going to dispatch the replacement. The kind lady gave a tracking # Which believe it or not as we were talking it arrived by the courier!!! Great coincidence!!! However short fall on Apples part not giving me the tracking # in the first place.. Due to bad weather I was at home otherwise I would not of been.

They did offer a compensation in kind which arrived by same courier 4 days later.

I installed Sequoia & working fine, did a dual boot system Tahoe to test it's stability seems ok though the 'Jury is still out at the moment"

That's what customer loyalty is all about. One could understand about delayed delivery because of potential device damage.

"If & when I get the replacement it will be the same as the original specs. Wouldn't offer an upgrade at all. With all the time I have now lost on this & loss of the unit is unbearable."

That'd be Apple's Call:

For me, it was a free upgrade. Originally, they were not going to upgrade the spec, but rather just give me the next available year's (2018) model with no changes. I went ahead and added it to my cart and paid the $2,325USD for it. They were fond enough to not charge the $2,500USD overhaul amount, all because of how much I had been through, and patiently worked with them. So, if they offered a swap out, I would say "Yes. They would give the free specs, unless they fondly decide elsewise."

I even offered to pay the difference between the original & next model.: Couldn't/wouldn't do that against Apple policy. I strongly beginning to see that customer relations means nothing to them these days. It will be their loss in the long run (Possibly short term in my case) Pity!!

It’s All About Customer Loyalty:

Working in the industry for more than two decades, I think Apple’s free-replacement just wanted to keep a loyal customer.
