MacBook Air: How to add more RAM?

I have a MacBook Air with 8GB memory running on Sequoia 15.7.3.

I have been offloading photos and using CleanMyMac to keep my computer running smoothly. I am running out of RAM space. How can I add additional space?

Help please and thank you.

You cannot add RAM to any MacBook Air with Apple Silicon M-series chip.

The RAM is fixed with whatever it shipped with.

Likewise with the storage capacity of the startup drive.

Whatever the MBA left the factory with is what it will remain through its lifespan.

I would advise that you uninstall CleanMyMac per the guidance given by the publisher. CMM has no place and no good use on the Mac. If fact, it and other apps like it are often implicated as the cause of performance problems people have with their Macs. CMM does nothing that macOS cannot do, and may remove important files from your user account.

If you need increase the storage for the computer then you'll need to use an external drive with the laptop. The drive can be either SSD or HDD in whatever capacity you can afford.

This is what you can do to create more free space:

• Reboot your Mac at least weekly. Let the OS clear caches and do housekeeping.

• Empty the Trash in the Dock.

• Empty the trash in the Photos app.

• Delete unused and unneeded application installers from your downloads folder and desktop. No need to store on your Mac what you can freely download any time.

• Transfer files that you don’t use daily to an external drive and then delete them from the startup drive and empty the trash. Files that take up the most room are movies, images and music.

You can take advantage of the optimized storage feature of macOS by using iCloud as described at this link.

How's that working out for you? Not well, I imagine.

Be advised that having used it, it may be necessary to completely erase the Mac and rebuild it from the ground up. Yes it is that bad. Go ahead and uninstall it, but that it is generally an insufficient remedy. Non-Apple "cleaning" products are scams. "CleanMyMac" in particular has been known to throw warnings that your Mac is running out of memory when it isn't.

Back to your original concern. Although it is not possible to add additional memory to a MacBook Air, it's very easy to determine if its performance is being limited by available memory. Please read Check if your Mac needs more RAM in Activity Monitor - Apple Support. If the "Memory Pressure" graph is frequently "red" your Mac would benefit from additional memory. If not, it won't. It's that simple.

You cannot add RAM to any MacBook Air, period. MacBook Airs have always had soldered-in RAM.

In case you meant to refer to internal SSD storage, the only MacBook Airs that can run Sequoia are

  • The Intel-based MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2020)
  • Apple Silicon (M-series) MacBook Airs

On all of those MacBook Airs, the flash chips are soldered in, and there is no way to upgrade the internal SSD.

What is the specific reason you want more RAM?. Stability? Slow performance? An on-screen alert or advisory? Something else?

Too often, users assume they have a RAM shortage when something else is the true cause of their issues.

The biggest cause of "slow" is the installation of useless aftermarket utilities and VPNs. I have worked reports here of slow storage (drive) performance where removing CMM increased data transfer speed 20%. The fact that it is in the Mac App Store is NOT an endorsement.

For a very long time, Macs have done a good job of keeping themselves tidy without outside help.
