Can't leave empty Apple Family nor Join my spouse's Apple Family despite removing all other members.

I am unable to leave an Apple Family even though I am the only account left and the organizer. I would like to join my wife's Apple Family Sharing where she already has everything set up, so I can manage my daughter's new iPad with her. When I hit the remove button, nothing happens. When I try to accept the invitation from my wife's Apple Family it tries to leave my Apple Family but then throws an error saying I cannot.

For context: I had to spend 2 hours on the phone with Apple support two weeks ago to remove my daughter's old Apple account from this family, and then wait a week and a half for it to finally be done. (We're using a different email for her on my wife's Apple Family now, and all that's working fine.) They said this would work now, but clearly it is not.

Thank you!

You can't join a new Family Sharing group until you leave an existing one, so that explains the first error. Until you can successfully disband the Family Sharing group you are currently in, you won't be able to join the other one.

For the second error, since you are the Organizer for that Family Sharing group, you can't simply remove yourself. You need to disband the group enbtirely and stop Family Sharing entirely to end that group and release your account from it.

Once the group has been completely disbanned you should be able to Join the new group.

Do note, you can only change Family Groups once a year.

These two posts suggest it may take several weeks for the account to be fully deleted.
