Administrator name and password required for macOS Catalina installation on 2012 MacBook Pro

Trying install macOS Catalina on my old 2012 Mac book pro with macOS Mojave. It needs an administrator name and password? Do I need to bring this computer to an Apple Store.

if you were able to log in on this Mac, you likely ARE the Administrator.

The first or only User-account created on the computer (and its password) are what is required.


This is NOT to be confused with your Apple-ID/Apple-Account.


The Apple user account and password is considered part of the Theft deterrence on a Mac.


if you want the Apple Store to CLEAR that Mac for you, you must be prepared to demonstrate ownership, all the way back to initial sale, else the default assumption is that it was stolen. There is no way to break in, and only demonstrated owners can get their Mac erased and the previous admin password removed.
