Early 2011 MacBook Pro OS installation problem

I am trying to reinstall the OS on my Early 2011 MacBook Pro, having completed the erase process prior to disposing of the device. The battery is completely shot and the device only works when plugged in to the mains, but it does work, albeit slowly. I have followed all the steps for reinstalling the OS (Sierra) but it won't complete the process. I have noticed that at the stage it asks you where you want to the installation to go, and I choose Mactintosh HD, it appears that the space available isn't enough for the installation. As the hard drive has been cleared I can't see how I can 'free up' any space. I really want to dispose of the device responsibly but I don't see how I can if I can't install an operating system. Can anyone help?

If your aim is to dispose of this device as in recycle, then there is no need to reinstall the OS.

You can either turn it in to your local Apple Store or other e-waste recycler as is or, if you wish, you might simply remove the internal drive and destroy that and recycle the remainder of the computer.

Removal of the drive is as simple as removing the back plate and an additional screw or two and done with.

Btw, reinstalling macOS Sierra has been problematic for some time for reasons other than what you are experiencing. Imho it would be much less trouble to remove the drive than continue on the path to reinstall the OS in a computer destined for recycling, assuming that is your goal.

the drive named 'MacOS Base System', of size around 2 GB, is a disk image expanded from the Mac's ROM to hold the stripped-down Recovery OS and Utilities. it has no extra room, and can not hold a new Install.

if you have NO larger Volume with space available, you may not have completed ERASE properly, or not specified MacOS extended format, or your drive is not working properly.

Thanks for your reply. I did complete Erase properly to the point that the device told me it was complete. I'm afraid I have no idea what the rest of your message means, I have just been following Apple's instructions to erase and reinstall and have no access to any other functions than the one on the screen. That said, D.I. Johnson's reply makes sense and I will now just take the device to the recycling centre as it is. Many thanks.
