iPhone 17 Pro: Overheating, fast drain, 'Screen' usage

I’m looking for advice and to see if others are experiencing the same issue.

Device: iPhone 17 Pro (new, purchased Feb 9 from carrier)

iOS: 26.3 (issue started recently / after first CarPlay navigation day)

Symptoms:

  • Phone gets very hot while idle, and battery drains extremely fast even with the screen off.
  • Example: battery dropped from ~80% to ~69% in ~40 minutes with no active use.
  • The Battery screen sometimes shows “Screen” as the top consumer even though I’m not using the phone.
  • While charging via cable, the phone can become extremely hot and I’ve seen the “Charging On Hold” (thermally limited charging) message.
  • At one point it felt hot even when the phone was powered off and charging (after it cooled down, unplugged it cooled further).

What I’ve tried:

  • Full restore / reset (set up again) – no real improvement.
  • Turned off Live Activities (it removed everything from the lock screen except the clock).
  • Disabled Location Services, Wi-Fi, mobile data, Bluetooth, background app refresh/sync for testing.
  • Still seeing significant idle drain and heat.

Notes:

  • The issue seemed to begin after the first day I used Apple Maps navigation via CarPlay, but it persists even after a full restore.
  • Unplugging from the charger helps it cool down, but the battery drain continues.

Questions:

  1. Has anyone seen a similar “Screen / Home & Lock Screen” style drain on iOS 26.3 with overheating?
  2. Any known fixes/workarounds beyond disabling Live Activities / Always-On / StandBy?
  3. Could this indicate a hardware/battery/charging circuit issue even though basic diagnostics reported no hardware problems?

You have not tried Restore to factory and setup without a backup restore, to eliminate apps. (Only test for a day and wipe and restore the backup before end of day to avoid wiping the iCloud backup )

Re Apple Maps, especially after CarPlay, always force close the app, and any other mapping or streaming apps, after use.

Turning off Location Services is an old chestnut that does nothing but turn off Stolen Device Protection and makes Maps and FindMy useless..

This is happening to me as well, and was also happening on in a previous version last year and it was related to switching between wi-fi routers at work, turning wi-fi on and off helped.

But now it is happening at home in this latest version (26.2.1) that I am using. I notice when I charge and remove the iphone 17 pro from charge it does this, heats up on the back and battery drops about 20% in 45min-60min.

Not a great start for Battery life/longevity in my new phone!
