I am writing to report that I have recently come into possession of an iPhone 15 Pro Max (Serial Number: ***) which I now realize is in 'Lost Mode'. It appears I was misled during the purchase process, and my primary goal now is to ensure the device is returned to its rightful owner

It is only the original owner that can provide contact information if they wish when putting the device in Lost Mode. For privacy concerns, you will have no way to contact the owner as they are in charge of what information they want to provide to you. They are still able to see where their phone is located, even when it is turned off, so that is why it is recommended to take it to a Lost and Found or turn it into the police where they will be able to come and pick it up. You don't want them knocking on your door in the middle of the night wondering how come you have their phone.

Turn it in to the police or take it to the lost and found of the location you found it at. Apple will not help you find the owner.
