Cannot remove Messages icon from toolbar
want to remove message icon from tool bar, but it wont be removed.

What 'toolbar' are you referring to? Do you mean the dock?
There are two ways to remove an app from the dock.
One is to click the app icon and drag it far up off the dock. It should 'pop' and disappear. Note that you have to drag it high - if you stay too close to the Dock, the OS thinks it might have been a mis-click, so doesn't remove the icon.. Drag it far enough that there's no doubt as to your intent.
If that still doesn't work, Ctrl-click on the app icon and uncheck the Options -> Keep In Dock menu item. That should remove it.
Both options depend on the application not being open/running. Open apps will be displayed in the Dock, no matter what.
