Lost iCloud Drive files

I have iCloud Drive folders and the contents of the many of the folders are gone. Apple support engineers said they are gone and can't be recovered. They are very valuable files and I need to get them back one way or another. I use an AirPort Time Capsule as my time machine and do continuous back ups. I also use external hard drives for back ups as well. I pay for the 2TB of iCloud storage and have more storage than I need.

What are the chances someone has had this issue and can help. Thanks so much, with great appreciation.

If you did not enable optimize files when turning on iCloud deive you can navigate to the folder in Time Machine and restore. If you optimize the files may not be resident on your Mac and therefore, not backed up.

I put the iCloud on my sidebar, installed one of my external hard drives , then I was able to recover most of my iCloud Drive files from Time Machine backups that were on the external hard drive.

I am still trying to figure out why the files just vanished out of iCloud on their own.

A hack, perhaps?

Secure your Account:

A. Verify this Device:

Verify that you the device is logged in to your account, by using this link: Check your Apple ID Device List to See where you're Signed in - Apple Support

B. Consider Modifying your Credentials:

Having been stollen, someone lily has your credentials. So, by all means, modifying them.

Modify: your login credentials (Using Both a New eMail and a New Password for each and all sites)
Associate: a different method of payment to your account
Enable: Two-Factor Authentication for Apple ID and for all other accounts that have such an applicable option

Recovering Lost iCloud Drive Files:

In iCloud Drive, you are paying for a subscription. Apple is not responsible for loss of data, and that is something you would have agreed to, upon opening an Apple Account.

Export iCloud Drive Frequently:

Based personal experiences, I've learned to export all of my iCloud Drive to an external hard drive. I would encourage you to do the same.
