Multiple partitions, full hard drive, when its not, finder broken...

When using the disk utility, my mac is showing the following partitions. I want it to be only one partition. When I getinfo for my hard drive its showing as full. Finder is not working properly and its all a bit messed up. Can anyone tell me how to fix this? See images. Thanks in advance.

The way to fix that space allocation is to completely ERASE the boot drive, which creates a new partition structure, install MacOS anew from fundamental sources available (which may produce an older version by default) upgrade to the MacOS version you want to be running, then restore your files form your trusted backup.

if you have nothing invested in the files on this computer, This article describes the way you both SHOULD have proceeded:

An Intel MacBook Pro 13-in from 2017 does not have a T2 chip, therefore avoids the complications of its security restrictions. But it means you must perform the many steps under: "If you can't use erases all content and settings" in that article.

This: Erase your Mac and reset it to factory settings - Apple Support

It will erase all user data and leave the Mac in the condition that it came from the factory.

In addition to that, afterward you should have your daughter do this:

What to do before you sell, give away, trade in or recycle your Mac - Apple Support

If this is not done, then the Mac will remain forever associated with your daughter's Apple ID/Account and you will not be able to personalize the computer properly for your own use.

When using the disk utility, my mac is showing the following partitions.

That is a mess—

you are not seeing the big picture—Disk Utility>View>Show All Devices Parent drive /Containers/Volumes

You want a clean slate...

erase/reformat/initialize as new following the previous post— are you will be asking for all kinds of issue downstream

If this were your daily driver Mac, and the disk were full and you had NO backup, it would be very difficult to get any files off it. you might lose everything.

Apple has provided Time Machine, a very good general purpose backup package, tightly integrated into MacOS, for you to use for free. All you need to do is supply an external drive, preferably two to three times as large as what you wish to store, connect it, and tell it to begin. A Time Machine backup drive does not need to be FAST.
