iMac won't wake from overnight sleep with new external Samsung T7 SSD

This issue with my mac not waking up only happens from OVERNIGHT SLEEP. I can use my mac throughout the day, with no issues occurring after waking from sleep multiple times each day. But for some reason when I try waking my mac in the morning after it has slept overnight...I just get the spinning wheel after I put in my log-in password. I end up having to just restart my mac each morning, because the wheel never stops spinning.

Something is being triggered from overnight sleep, that is not being triggered by sleep during the day?

Here's some basic history & my troubleshooting steps:

My internal HD recently failed on my 2017 mac. So I just bought a new 4 TB Samsung T7 external SSD, formatted it, set it as my Startup Disk and installed my data from a Time Machine backup, etc.

The install on my T7 SSD was a success, but I immediately started having random freezing issues, so after some research I made the following recommended changes in Energy Saver:

'Prevent computer from sleeping automatically' - CHECKED box

'Put hard disks to sleep' - UNCHECKED box

'Wake for network access' - UNCHECKED box

'Enable Power Nap' - UNCHECKED box

Next I made changes via the Terminal:

sudo pmset -a disksleep 0

sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 3

Then I...

Reset the SMC.

Reset the NVRAM.

'Unmounted' my internal mac HD in safe mode.

Reinstalled my macOS from safe mode.

I checked my startup programs to see if anything else might be causing the wake-up issue, but there was nothing unusual.

I've also run Disk Utility multiple times...both from standard and safe mode with no errors identified.

At this point, I don't know what else to try?? Any help from the community is much appreciated!

BTW: I know there are 3rd party programs (Amphetamine) that can manipulate power settings for a mac to possibly fix this, but I really don't want to go down that road unless absolutely necessary.

It is Full Computer Sleep Mode that is causing problems for systems using external drives.

In your case, it sounds like Full Sleep is turning off power to the external startup drive.

As a test

Turn On "Prevent automatic sleeping when display is off"

Set "Turn display off when inactive" to 5 or 10 minutes

Leave the iMac on during the day and only allow the display(s) to turn Off on the timer

Overnight, optionally leave the iMac on with the display(s) off or Shut Down

Do not manually Sleep the iMac from the Apple Drop Down menu

Shut Down the iMac when away for a day or more

There are two levels of Sleep. Display Off and Full Computer Sleep.

So you think it's manually putting the iMac to Sleep at night that could be causing this?

Yes because full computer sleep is cutting off the power to the USB ports, which is causing the iMac to crash when it wakes up and can't find the OS on the external startup drive.

FWIW I'm not sure if updating the macOS will help or not...?

But your 2017 iMac can be upgraded to macOS 14 Ventura.

Here's an update... the first 2 mornings of letting the iMac fall asleep naturally at night were a success, I was able to log-in the next morning after putting in my password, no issues. But...the 3rd morning, it froze up again?

So there's some progress, but there's still an issue... any other recommendations I can try?

Try quitting open App's, before leaving it to fall asleep.

Thank you for the reply... I just checked my Energy Saver settings and they already match what you recommended.

Regarding overnight... I usually manually put my iMac to Sleep from the drop down menu, but during the day I think I usually just let it naturally go to Sleep. I'll pay attention now to exactly what I'm doing depending on the time of day.

I'll let the iMac go to Sleep naturally tonight and see what happens tomorrow morning?

The only way to know for sure, is to test.

I did look into upgrading the macOS, but I have some older 32-bit software that won't work once you move past Mojave to Catalina.

That is understandable if there are no current replacements for that software.
