Can iPhone camera be hacked?

Received email saying my iphone camera and microphone was hacked and videos of me would be released if I didn't pay Bitcoin. Is this a scam? Can iphone cameras be hacked and hackers take video of you? My phone is not jailbroken. I didn't click on any links or reply to the email.

Hello,

Based on what you’ve described, it is very likely that the email you received is a scam. These types of messages are known as “sextortion scams,” where attackers try to scare recipients into sending money, often in Bitcoin, by claiming to have compromising videos.

If your iPhone is not jailbroken and you have not clicked on any suspicious links or downloaded unknown files, it is extremely unlikely that your camera or microphone has been hacked. Apple’s security measures make remote access to these features without your consent very rare.

Here are a few recommendations:

Do not pay the ransom or respond to the email.

Mark the email as spam or phishing in your email service.

Change your email and Apple ID passwords if you are concerned about account security.

Enable two-factor authentication for additional protection.

Keep your iPhone updated to the latest iOS for security patches.

If you experience unusual behavior on your device or see indications of compromise, consider contacting Apple Support for professional guidance.

Stay safe!

100% a scam. They send those emails in bulk hoping someone panics and pays. As long as you didn’t click anything, download anything, or jailbreak your phone, you're fine. They usually don’t have anything, they just try to scare you with vague threats.

Technically iPhone hacks exist, but they are rare and usually targeted. You can use a tool like Certo or MVT if you think you might be targeted by something like this but as for the message you received, you can just ignore it.

Yes iPhone can be hacked (rare and targeted), and no you didn’t get hacked here.

You were sent a work of creative fiction.

One of the more versions of this creatively-worded request for money was the “pervert” messages, and there are many discussions of that particular spam. (Example)

Ignore it, and move on with your day.

PS: If the “hackers” had what they claimed, they’d show you some images or video, too.
