Filtering in iOS18:

A. Go Here: Block, Filter, and Report Messages on iPhone - Apple Support

B. iMessage Being the Culprit:

If iMessages is turned on, then you may need to make a few changes, as unknown senders with be blocked.

C. Third-Party Apps:

Are you using any security software here? If so, you may need to configure your filters. Keep antivirus software off of your device. Malwarebytes and Bouncer are two great apps to use. However, you may need to add numbers to your Safe Senders list on such apps.

"iPhone XR: No sound alerts for new messages: I just need to know how to enable audio notifications for messages coming in from people that are not yet in my contact list."

Filtering in iOS18:

Turn Off "Since Unknown Callers":

This is something Apple has its users do, prior to having them call the customer back --That way, the phone call is assured to go through.

  1. Go to: Settings
  2. Tap: Apps
  3. Tap: Phone or FaceTime
  4. Scroll to: Screen Unknown Callers
  5. Select: Never

From Apple's Site:

  1. Go Here: Manage Unknown Callers on iPhone - Apple Support
  2. As it Reads: "Never means calls from unsaved numbers ring like any other call; Ask Reason for Calling means these calls are screened (the caller is asked why they're calling before your phone even rings); and Silence automatically silences these calls and sends them to voicemail."

Perhaps also note the Voicemail settings may (or not) enables

your iPhone to handle calls & alert notifications. And VM does

require the Carrier or cell provider to enable that feature..

When that does not intercede and move the incoming caller

to be received by your iPhone or leave you a Voice message?

Then that may be a cause for you to Miss calls, from those who

are Not in your Contacts nor in your Address Book. No record

of those missed calls may appear. Or they may; this happened

to me, with an older iOS than 18.7. And in the iPhone before XR.

When I later had to replace a defective early SE iPhone (1st ed.)

after battery totally expanded and broke my SE model; I'd gone

to Apple service, to have a replacement battery installed.

My SE battery showed 92% life; but the authorized Apple service,

on opening the back of my SE, noticed started to expand very Fast.

And like an accordion, the screen and back of SE iPhone blew out.!!

That was in Sept 2025; I had almost new XR iPhone with me; & asked

the Shop test it, and ordered replacement battery. The XR runs newer

iOS version iOS18.x. Newer XR + iOS shows older 'Missed' VM calls.

.I was able to see/hear four older VM calls, my SE w/ iOS15.x missed

when I accessed Voice Mail from a newer iPhone XR w/ later iOS18.7..

So any reason an 'alternative universe' may have tossed ripple-rocks

into your communications pond? ~That might have presented issues.
