To be clear you don't need to save the documents after you opened them and there is not an additional copy created where you would be deleting the old ones. Once you open a document in v15, you will then see it in your Open Recent.. menu.
I doubt there is going to be any "fix" where your Open Recently documents would show up in the v.15 of the app. The app downloads on the Mac as a completely separate app where the documents are compatible across each version, but other changes in one app, such as Setting or recently opened documents will not be reflected in the other. Each app is sandboxed, like all other apps, and that is why the data on one of them cannot be read by the other.
