iPhone 14 locked to owner; forgot setup password

Purchased an iPhone 14 from AT&T April 2024 as a secondary phone. Used it the first two months. Phone has continued service uninterrupted on my account since purchase. Three months ago I attempted to use it but phone was “Locked To Owner”. “Activation Lock prevents anyone who is not the owner from using this iPhone”.

To unlock this iPhone, enter the Apple Account and password that were used during setup.

I don’t remember the password used during setup. How can I unlock this phone?

iPhone 16e, iOS 26

This Apple article has instructions for what to do if you have forgotten your Apple account password, or the system does not recognize the one you remember —> https://support.apple.com/HT201487 or go directly to this link —> http://iforgot.apple.com/

If you don't receive your verification or reset email, read this Apple Support article: https://support.apple.com/HT201455

"When you make certain updates to your Apple ID, we’ll send you an email to help you complete the update. For example, you might have reset your password, reset your security questions, or added a new email address to your account." Also check your junk mail.

If you find you can’t sign in, reset your password, or receive verification codes, you can request account recovery (read this support article: https://support.apple.com/kb/HT204921 ) to regain access to your account. Account recovery might take a few days or longer, depending on the specific account information you can provide to verify your identity. This is a multi-step process. Passwords these days can block access to thousands of dollars of equipment and everything you do with an account including banking. You may wish to develop a system where you have a record of them in case you forget them. It is getting harder and harder to them reset as you can read in the support articles I provided.
