Troubles ending an open water workout

My Apple watch begins an open water workout, but at the end of the swim if I don't stop the swim workout right away, it doesn't record. What the heck? It's never easy to get back to shore and dry fingers and watch completely so that I can stop the workout. How can an Open Water Swim workout just disappear? How to make it work? Can I return the watch if it's going to continue being finnicky?

Did you already have a look at the related part about "Go for a swim with Apple Watch" in the Apple Watch User Guide? You can pause the workout by pressing the Digital Crown and the Side button, and then disable the Water lock to be able to stop the workout.
