Opening large PDF files on iPhone keeps freezing – memory issue?

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to open a very large public court document PDF (over 8000 pages) on my iPhone 14 using the default Files app and it either freezes or crashes halfway through loading.

The file opens fine on my MacBook, but on iOS it becomes unresponsive when I try to scroll or search inside it.

For reference, it’s similar in size to this document I was reviewing:

this a RAM limitation on iPhone? Would using Books or a third-party PDF reader handle large files better?

Appreciate any advice.

Yes, this is a memory/processing related limitation on the iPhone, and the default Files app is the worst possible tool for an 8,000‑page PDF. iOS simply doesn’t stream huge PDFs the way macOS does, so the phone tries to load massive chunks into RAM and stalls.

Try opening that document with Adobe Acrobat Reader. This app can be downloaded from the App Store. Try out the free version and see whether that resolves the issue.

Just following up in case anyone has run into this before.

I tested the same PDF again and noticed it freezes mostly when using the search function inside Files. Scrolling slowly works for a while, but once I jump to a different section, the app becomes unresponsive.

The file size is around 300–400MB and roughly 8000+ pages.

Would increasing available storage help performance, or is this more of a RAM limitation on iOS?

Also curious if anyone here regularly works with very large court or government PDFs on iPhone and has found a stable workflow.

Thanks again.
