Should a couples iPhones have separate Apple Id's?
My wife and I both have iPhones. Do we need separate Apple Id's to have autonomous phones, meaning to not be seeing each others message traffic.

YES, you both should have your own Apple Account (formerly called Apple ID). Either of you can read each others text messages (delete them as well). Both of you will see each other's call logs and voicemail messages. There are other reasons an Apple Account should not be shared. Read this --> https://support.apple.com/en-us/109040
