iPhone VoiceOver dropdown shifts focus to start

On my iPhone 16 (version 26.2) iOS VoiceOver starts reading the first item in a dropdown, regardless of where the user is focused. In a situation like a datepicker with a year dropdown with default focus on current year, the visual dropdown moves to the beginning of the year list (which in my case is 1920) and starts reading from there. If the user wants to pick a more recent year such as 2024, they would have to scroll through about 100 years before getting back to the year they want, even though the focus was originally on 2026. This is happening with the native html select element, and I feel this is a bad user experience. Is this the intended behavior, and has this always been the behavior of dropdowns when used with VoiceOver?

Thank you for your post to the community!

I understand you would like to be more in control when using VoiceOver; for example to have more specific items read in lists, or perhaps to have list items read from top down, or from bottom up, as required.

Am no expert in this area, yet your post to the community deserves some response.

It is likely those who use the VoiceOver software the most are the experts.

Please excuse ... if there's nothing new to you here.

We have no way of knowing your level of expertise with VoiceOver.

Apple support's online article:

How to: Change your VoiceOver settings on iPhone:

Eg: says you can:

"Adjust the speaking voice"

Go to Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver >

  • Adjust the pitch: Tap Speech, tap a voice, then drag the slider. You can also turn on Pitch Change to have VoiceOver use a higher pitch when speaking the first item of a group (such as a list or table) and a lower pitch when speaking the last item of a group."

Also: "Customize VoiceOver settings for an activity"

Eg: says:

"You can customize a group of VoiceOver settings for an activity, such as programming. Then, when you open certain apps or adjust the rotor, the settings for speech, audio, verbosity, typing, navigation, and braille are applied automatically.

  1. Go to Settings  > Accessibility > VoiceOver > Activities.
  2. Choose an existing activity or tap Add Activity.
  3. Adjust the settings, then below Automatic Switching, do any of the following:
    • Apply the settings for certain apps: Tap Apps, then select the ones you want this setting to apply to.
    • Apply the settings for certain contexts: Tap Context, then select one or more contexts, such as Word Processing, Messaging, or Console."

Also the support article: Use VoiceOver gestures on iPhone:

Eg: says :

"VoiceOver gestures include two-, three-, and four-finger taps and swipes"

You can:

"Explore and speak items on the screen:

"To explore the screen, drag your finger over it. VoiceOver speaks the name of each item you touch.

You can also use VoiceOver gestures to explore the screen in order, from top to bottom and left to right."

To "Select and speak an item : Tap or touch the item"

To "Pause or continue speaking : Two-finger tap"

and

"You can use Three-finger tap to:

Speak additional information, such as the position within a list or whether text is selected"
