iPhone 17 Pro Max scrolling/UI lag on iOS 26.3

Hi everyone,

I’m experiencing consistent scrolling stutter and UI micro-lag on iOS 26.3 on my iPhone 17 Pro Max (device is new, only a few weeks old).

The issue occurs in almost all third-party and system apps — for example:

  • Instagram
  • Settings
  • Contacts
  • Other social media apps
  • When swiping between Home Screen pages
  • When switching quickly between apps

The scrolling doesn’t fully freeze, but there are small, noticeable “jumps” or frame drops during slow or medium scrolling. It feels like the refresh rate briefly drops or the animation timing becomes inconsistent. These micro-stutters are especially visible when reading text slowly and scrolling carefully.

However, in Safari the scrolling appears smooth and stable. I don’t notice the same stutter there, which makes the situation confusing.

What I’ve already checked:

  • Limit Frame Rate is turned OFF
  • Low Power Mode is OFF
  • The phone has no screen damage, no display artifacts
  • Restarted the device
  • The issue persists even after closing background apps
  • Screen recording does not properly capture the issue (likely because it records at a fixed frame rate)

It almost feels like ProMotion is aggressively adjusting refresh rate in most apps, but Safari behaves differently. I’m not sure whether this is a software optimization issue in iOS 26.2 or something that could indicate a hardware/display problem.

Is anyone else experiencing similar scrolling inconsistencies on iOS 26.2?

Is this expected behavior due to adaptive refresh rate, or should I consider running hardware diagnostics or contacting Apple support?

Also worth noting, Apple says performance can feel off right after updates due to background indexing and system tasks: If you can't update or restore your iPhone or iPod touch - Apple Support

It’s mostly small micro-lag / frame drops when scrolling in third-party apps and even some system areas. Safari feels fine for me as well, which is kind of interesting.
I’ve already tried the usual stuff (restart, Low Power Mode off, frame rate limit off), but it still shows up.
From what I’ve read, this kind of thing can sometimes be iOS animation / rendering inconsistency or background performance adjustments rather than hardware.
A few official Apple resources that might be useful:
General iPhone performance troubleshooting: • Restart your iPhone - Apple Support
If you think it might be display / ProMotion related behavior: • https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212104
If issues persist after updates, Apple also suggests checking software updates + reset steps: • Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support
In some cases, a quick system repair can also help stabilize performance. At this point I’d personally wait for a minor iOS update unless it gets worse.

Please contact Apple Support. You need to have Apple perform diagnostics on your iPhone. It can be done in person at an Apple Retail Store or at an Apple Authorized Service Provider. You can also contact Apple Support and request remote diagnostics.

26.4.1 hasn’t fixed it either. How is such a large multi-trillion dollar company unable to fix such a basic issue. The phone feels unusable while scrolling.

You're expecting Apple to fix an issue which the vast majority of users, like me, don't have on their iPhone 17 Pro Max on iOS 26.4.1. I have an iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, with zero scrolling issues or UI lag in any way. I know several people with the same phone, with no scrolling issues or UI lag.

What you need to determine is why you have such issues. And since this is a user to user only forum, where we can't see your phone or know what you may have installed on your phone, such as perhaps a VPN, which routinely causes issues, we can't fix your issues.

Schedule an appointment at your Apple Store Genius Bar to show Apple what you're experiencing and to have your phone tested. Nothing will be accomplished here. Most people don't have such issues.
