Mac mini iMessage 'needs to be enabled' error

I've suddenly started getting an "iMessage needs to be enabled to send this message" on my macOS Sequoia 15.7.4 M4 Mac mini. This happened overnight: no problems yesterday, "Cannot Send Message" this morning.

Things I have tried:

• Quitting Messages.app and relaunching

• Force-quitting Messages.app and relaunching

• Restarting Mac and launching Messages

• Deleting com.apple.Messages.plist, restarting Mac and launching Messages

No dice; I'm still getting the error.

I've found lots of suggestions for dealing with this on iOS devices, but none on Macs. Please help!

Something similar has happened to me. (Macbook Air M1, Mac OS Tahoe 26.3). iMessage was working fine until Sunday March 1 at 13:00 (GMT), when I received a message from my wife on all my devices (iOS, iPad and Mac). When I tried to send a message of my own to my daughter at 19:20, it failed to send. Since then, the Apple Account items in Messages Settings are greyed out (but active), and the spinner is running, as if it is having difficulty checking in with iCloud. However, it does claim to have done a sync during that time. (It hasn't though -- none of the data has been synced with that on my iPhone or iPad.)
