Mail app authentication fails after email password change

I recently had to change my email password for security reasons. Since I use the Mail app to send and receive emails, the app gives me an error code saying


“Cannot Get Email

The connection to the server failed.


Server code’ AUTHENTICATION-FAILED’, server message ‘AUTHENTICATION Invalid credentials’.”


Prior to iOS 26, Apple made it easy to help you update your email password on the Mail app through its settings, but now it’s nearly impossible to fix this. To add insult to injury, the password I made this morning is now invalid on my email account and I’m jumping through hoops to try to fix this.


Apple, as much as I appreciate your efforts to protect your users, you’ve made it even harder to update our email credentials for the Mail app when we use Gmail, Outlook, or Yahoo.


Does anyone have the same issues? If so, what did you do to fix this? And can Apple fix it on their end?

So what happens when you go to settings - apps - mail?

When you open Apple mail app to access your account, you should see account error at the bottom and when you click it takes you directly to the password section of your mail account.

I don't know about Yahoo or Gmail, but using Outlook via 3rd party app, requires 2FA, do you have one set up and did you authenticate yourself?

Just because you're using an iphone doesn't make it an Apple issue, it is your email provider who sent you the error message not Apple, they have no idea what your username and password is for said account.

Did you contact your email provider or at the very least look at their help site?
